An excerpt from my script review for Marty Supreme which will be available 03/17/26:

3.) Quality of Characters

So why didn’t I care about the story?

Marty’s a prick, plain and simple.

We’re told, as amateur writers, that if we can’t write a character audiences love, give them someone they love to hate.

(In terms of “hate” think America’s Greatest Actor, Walton Goggins delivery of Boyd Crowder in Justified.)

Marty Mauser isn’t even worth hating, he’s simply the guy in the room talking too loudly on his phone…annoying as fuck.

His “grifts” aren’t clever, they’re just stupid lies to get him out of trouble or a few extra bucks until the next scene.

The only thing I hated is that I was forced to finish the script for the merit of this review.

Now…I’ve not seen the film, so maybe Chalamet delivers a worthwhile performance, but while we’re on the topic…

I mean, that comment didn’t really bother me, because I wouldn’t go see a ballet or opera, because that doesn’t interest me.

(At the same time though, you’d have to force me to go to the actual Academy Awards and sit through the entire thing.)

What struck me as odd, was that when I rewatch the clip of him making those comments, and then read Marty Supreme, was doing some Daniel Day-Lewis level method acting that he just couldn’t get out of?

It felt like something Marty would say, and have zero qualms about people being offended by.

(Funny that he talked about his job and “keeping theaters alive” with how rapidly AI is advancing.  Hopefully he squirreled his money away…but he’s also dating Kylie Jenner, so…maybe not…)

And after that, there’s no one to really like or root for.

Rachel…she cheats on her husband then lies about him abusing her.

Kay…she’s the faded starlet who Marty feels he has to conquer…

Milton…guy’s a stereotypical tycoon douchebag…

Endo…glad he won, but again, wasn’t it kind of cheating?

And then all the others who pop in for a scene or two just to move Marty from one dilemma to the next.

The only thing that did work was that there was something slightly satisfying about Marty getting fucked over every time he caught a break via his manipulation.

Lastly, there was one character I enjoyed, because she’s played by one of the most annoying sounding, yet genuine (as far as the entertainment business goes) and that’s Miss Maryann in the shoe store.

I tried to find a clip, but Mariann From Brooklyn is self described as Howard Stern’s biggest fan.

If you’ve ever heard the show, there’s often the sound of crows cawing when she calls in.

She seems like a really nice lady though, and her love for Howard is unflinching, so much so that when she sees him in person she bursts into tears and becomes all emotional, even though it’s been countless years of her calling into the show talking to him and meeting him face to face on multiple occasions.

Oh, and she isn’t “40s, female, overweight”.

She may be a bit older than 40, but overweight isn’t true, especially when you realize they wanted her specifically for that role.

Kind of a dick move writing her that way.
