An excerpt from Reals’ script review for The Strangers 2 (Prey at Night) which will be available 04/07/24:
What Worked
The Opening – Man, what a way to open this! Sure, killing the previous final girl off in the first scene has been done before in Friday the 13th Part 2, but I wasn’t really expecting to see Liv Tyler’s character again and it was a surprise to see her hunted down in the opening pages.
Just a really cool way to connect the two films and start with a bang!
Starting A Scene As Late As Possible – I like that we meet our main family just as they are being evicted from their home. And not when they get the first eviction notice, but when they are literally being forced out of the home by the police.
It is heartbreaking and you really do feel for them and understand their situation right from the jump without much exposition.
The Setting – I apologize for the big chunk of the script here, but I think it is a good description of the trailer park and sets up the eerie location nicely.
From Pages 13 and 14:
INT. TRAILER PARK
There are hundreds of them. White, yellow, blue and tan. Each lined up with tiny driveways. Each with tiny yards.
It is like a mini city. Every direction, all around, there are trailers and abandoned lots heading off to the distance.
Each one empty, deserted.
It’s like a maze.
Mike & Luke – There is an exchange between Mike (the Father) and Luke (the Son) on Pages 19 – 20 that is really well done. It says a lot quickly, and we understand the conflict between the two and the anger the son feels at his father for uprooting their entire family after losing the house.
Here is a short section:
LUKE
You should of asked us…
MIKE
That’s not the way it works. Christ boy, you would’ve been gone in two years either way. This life, this shit will mean nothing.
LUKE
It was my life.
MIKE
The people riding in this truck with you tomorrow. That’s your life.
