Horror Month 2026 Weekly Wrap Up

Week 2

Insidious: Out of the Further – Well, this was a wonderful surprise. It was actually pretty damn good, I enjoyed this a lot. I don’t think many saw this when it was in theaters, maybe since the last one was so bad, people just assumed this would be too or they checked out since the last one really didn’t come out that long ago. This felt like it had a bunch of fresh new ideas, with a character being able to pull ghosts into the real world, making them human again. I felt there were less jumpscares and more scenes just meant to creep you out, like that dentist scene that had me shifting in my seat with how uneasy it was to look at their hideous teeth. It’s pretty gross, almost reminiscent of something you’d find in a Sam Raimi film like Drag Me to Hell. I thought very little of this movie going in and now I’m happy I saw it. SEE IT!

Family – It felt like a horror movie that was too good to be a horror movie, using the generic framing as one to just make it a metaphor about handling grief. There are some cool scenes, the dog standing, the mom peeking out from the doorway, but it had way too many issues to ignore. Like the completely pointless rabbi grandpa character. Why was he even in this? Usually a character like this is there to spew exposition to us to help explain what the supernatural thing is that’s going on, but nope, he really doesn’t do anything. I really didn’t care too much for this movie, but I didn’t hate or, I saw what they were doing and it just didn’t work for me, so RENT.

V/H/S/Mixtape – This was pretty disappointing. I knew it might be before going in to seeing it, for a couple of reasons. For one, they didn’t even announce this was coming out until a few weeks before October. And when they finally did release a trailer for it, it was pretty underwhelming. This didn’t feel rushed, but it did feel like maybe their focus was on the new one they’re making that’s coming to theaters, which is going to cash in on the success of Backrooms. For this year’s movie, as it has been a tradition we get one ever October, has two worth talking about shorts, while the others are pretty meh. I like the Gwar segments even though I’m not really sure why they are there. They do open the movie off with a pretty funny skit. The first segment was about an old puppet show that tv executives want to bring back, but the puppets don’t want that, killing everyone that enters their shop. The other good short was actually a music video. As the theme this year is music. The plot was about a mortician getting revenge on her boss who assaulted her. She fakes his death as to bury him alive. I honestly wish every short was like this, just a music video telling a horror story. I forget what the others were. There was even a weird animated short that didn’t fit in at all. The longest one was directed by RZA, about the daughter of a musician who died and she is tasked I guess with creating a song made from victims she tortures and kills. It had potential but a lot of the gore SFX looked silly and I wasn’t clear on her goal. I thought it was to get her father back from the dead but it doesn’t really have much of a conclusion, it just ends. This was a pretty weak showing this year, but I’ll give it a RENT.

Fall 2: Deadpoint – I enjoyed the first film well enough, though I did need to go on YouTube real fast to watch the ending again, as I couldn’t remember what the hell happened. This movie takes place a few months after the events of the first film, focusing on the sister of the one who died. To face her fears and get over the death of her sister, she sets out on a mountain climb in her sister’s adventure journal she left behind. And of course things go wrong and once again we have characters stuck. This wasn’t too bad, they even set it up at the end with the sister character seeking revenge on the girl who survived in the first film. RENT.

Bloody Tennis – From the trailer I was getting HIM vibes but instead of football it was tennis. If that sounds even more of a boring sport to watch, you’d be right. A group of girls from all over the world go to this wacko lady who is world famous for training tennis pros. However her methods are basically kill and eat the opponent you defeated. Not really sure if that’s a spoiler, I mean, the dead give away that they are eating the girls who lost is the meals prepared for them is whatever nationality they happen to be. Chinese girl gets turned into Chinese food. It’s that level of cleverness. Our lead character also sucks as do all the other girls in the group. The movie honestly reminded me of this hentai called Crimson Climax. I knew this one was going to be bad, but I felt like I needed to get it over with since it was on the list. SKIP.

Buddy – Man, I liked this movie but I wanted to love it. It was a bit of a letdown if we’re being honest. I recently watched two other movies with killer puppets on a children’s show, one I can’t remember the name of on Amazon and the other being from the new VHS movie. I never saw it, but Buddy also seems to share some similarities between that Hulu original movie that came out a couple of years ago, Mr. Crocket. With Buddy, I think I was hoping for more over the top gore or really any gore but it’s pretty tame for the most part. Not mistakenly take your kids to go see it tame like one mom did but still a lot less gore than I was hoping for. It starts off like a twisted Barney episode where if Barney accidentally kills a kid in a fit of anger, then I guess it transforms into a weird Dora the Explorer episode where Dora gets drugged by a twisted version of Howdy Doody. I did like the fact the main girl is stuck carrying around this talking mailbox with the post still attached. It was good, but I was expecting more. RENT.
