An excerpt from my script review for Happy Death Day which will be available 10/27/25:
1.) Marketability of the Idea
Groundhog Day, but it’s horror.
The main character is brutally murdered each day and every day in this nonstop loop.
Simple and interesting enough premise, but I always confuse this with two others, the Back to the Future style horror Totally Killer, or the Vince Vaughn horror version of Freaky Friday just called…Freaky.
Again, all clever takes on the horror genre, but for me (and remember I’m not the Cap’n or Reals) they all just seem to blend together.
The good news there, and something that should be mentioned each and every time we review a horror script, this genre is the most popular and forgiving in all of cinema.
Therefore, even if those above projects are all eerily similar, there will still be fans paying to see it.
On a completely unrelated side note, the more I think about this site the more I feel it isn’t going to be needed in the near future.
We went out to dinner with another couple, and the husband is very into AI for his engineering job, stating that it’s advancing in leaps and bounds replacing some positions but also creating new ones.
One of the things I told him is that it won’t be long before streaming services like Netflix or Amazon Studios will use artificial intelligence to generate user inspired (and desired) content.
Tilly Norwood, the AI-generated actress, has already pissed a lot of folks off in Hollywood, but it’s only a matter of time before the technology advances enough that not only are we getting personalized AI actors, but sets, plots, series, etc.
Think of it…not only do you pick a genre and/or basic plot, you could even pick the style of cinematography you want to watch.
It’s not perfect now, but realistically it will be sooner than we think.
So my point, dear reader, is that if you haven’t made the leap yet, maybe think of another hobby you’re looking to turn into a profession.
I remember reading somewhere that this year had record spec script sales, and that’s great, but personally I wouldn’t bet a lot of my time or money on it becoming the norm.
Anyway…
Happy Death Day Box Office Stats
($125M on a budget of $5M?…why aren’t you writing a horror spec again? Oh right…AI will beat you to it.)
