An excerpt from my script review for KPop Demon Hunters which will be available 12/31/25:

Summer 2025. New Smyrna Beach, FL.

Now if you remember the previous family summer vacation we witnessed the glory that was Deadpool & Wolverine together in a packed north Florida theater, but much like the other three people at the table in Bad Bunny’s sketch, the boy and I had zero clue what KPop Demon Hunters was, let alone the phenomenon it would become.

So we sat down to watch it as a family in our Air BnB…

Now, I’m not the target audience, having only mildly enjoyed it (glad it was on Netflix) but I can easily see how it would become an instant success in the vein of Barbie or the first Wicked.

It’s a musical, which is hit or miss, but even more this is like catching lightning in a bottle. For every one KPop there are easily five or more straight to Netflix or Amazon Prime films my girls sit through that are not worth watching, let alone popular.

Is it good filler for these streaming services? Sure.

After all, my mother-in-law is still a diehard fan of Hallmark movies even though it’s the same tired plot being used over and over.

And if that’s all you’re setting out to do, create filler for cable or streaming services, that’s fine. Writers can make a living off that.

Just be wary of saying, “I’m writing the next KPop Demon Hunters script,” because chances are there were plenty before this film and plenty after that no one has ever heard of.

So what made this successful? We’ll explore that in the next sections…

(Keep in mind this figure was after it had been streaming on Netflix all summer.)
