An excerpt from my script review for John Wick: Chapter 4 which will be available 12/18/23:
1.) Marketability of the Idea
John. Wick.
Those two words right there are enough explanation for this section if I didn’t have a fun little “marketability” story.
After reading the script last night, I sat down with my Mother-in-law who’s visiting and we watched 2 and 3.
She’s part of a walking club, and each weekend they all go to see a movie after their walk. Needless to say she’s seen a lot of movies, Chapter 4 being the most recent in the installment, but she sat down to watch these with me anyway, since it’s been a while.
(And because she sees so many films she often forgets the particulars in franchises.)
One question she asked…
Do you think the overwhelming percentage of these films are just fight scenes?
My answer? Yes…and that’s kind of the point.
Audiences expect it.
We want to see Keanu Reeves kick ass, because this character upped the game in the action genre.
And if you watch his training videos, Keanu puts the time into the role giving us all the more reason to go see it.
His dedication leads to our enjoyment.
The second part of what makes this franchise so enjoyable?
The world building.
The Continental. The High Table. The rules they all (choose) to follow. The deeper John goes “under the table” the more real things feel, making it easier to suspend our disbelief.
