An excerpt from my script review for Ambulance which will be available 04/11/22:
2.) Plot Stability
Every now and then we review projects that we don’t suggest emulating.
For instance…
You’re not Quentin Taratino.
You’re not Guillermo del Toro, was another recent one.
And now we can add to the list –
You’re not Michael Bay.
Granted, he didn’t write this, but neither should you tailor a lavish action script to his style, as an amateur writer.
Yes, you can write whatever you want, and as a true artist you’re fine with whatever result that yields sale or no.
But if your goal is to sell your project and become a professional writer, there are avenues with better odds.
(And even those aren’t great.)
That’s not to say this project wasn’t an entertaining read, just that my suggestion is to consider another genre if you’re trying to break in.
This script did have those big set pieces we’d expect from a Michael Bay film.
First, almost the entire film is a car chase, after the bank robbery of course.
Guns. Explosions. Helicopters.
Nothing in this script conveys the notion of “low budget”.
The one thing I truly loved about this script?
We walk in late to the bank robbery!
It was fucking fantastic!!!
(“Come in late, and leave early.”)
Zach walks up to a locked bank door, and is greeted by Danny posing as the bank manager.
No cliché “This is a bank robbery! Everybody down!” bullshit scene we’ve seen a million times before.
It also got us into the ambulance pretty quickly in terms of page count.
I’m not going to go too far into spoilers, but if you’re looking for a project/film where you can just shut your brain off and enjoy the ride, this isn’t bad.
There are a few twists that worked, so it wasn’t completely predictable especially the ending.
