1.) Marketability of Idea
Kudos to Reese Witherspoon and her producing partner Bruna Papandrea. They are batting 1000% after acquiring WILD and GONE GIRL in galleys before publication and before the books became international bestsellers!
Unlike GONE GIRL, a dark twisty thriller tailor made for cinematic adaptation, a memoir like WILD can be tricky to adapt. That said, there has always been a market for true life adventure stories of self-discovery and self-realization.
Recent examples: TRACKS, EAT PRAY LOVE, INTO THE WILD
This type of character centric movie has obvious appeal to actors and can be Oscar bait.
