An excerpt from my script review for Ferrari which will be available 01/22/24:

1.) Marketability of the Idea

Another biopic, a genre that seems to pop up quite a bit, especially on the Black List each year.

The principle behind that is probably due to the fact that next to an existing franchise, an existing celebrity, inventor, famous person, etc. yields some sort of “name recognition” with the audience that Hollywood can cash in on.

And that’s one of the issues studios are battling, seeing a return on their investment.

Take myself for example…

Our beloved Cap’n just released his “best list” in the form of the 2nd Annual Golden Cagey Awards, and I realized not only did I not see most of the films on that list, the only film I actually saw in the theater was Barbie because the Boss insisted on it.

More often than not, we don’t catch these films until they inevitably debut on one of the streaming services six months to a year later

True, I am getting older, and with the children as busy as they are, setting time aside to take a “staycation” at the movie theater isn’t at the top of the list (and let’s be honest, with all the preplanning that goes into seeing a new release these days it is like a vacation).

But am I, or the demographic related to me, the only ones?

I really don’t think so.

The times they are a’ changing, methinks.

Take my opening to this review…

We spent most of last Monday, as a family (or at least most of us, as the boss tagged out after a few videos), watching a YouTube streamer (Jacksepticeye) for probably 3 or 4 hours in the afternoon.

And we enjoyed ourselves.

The guy’s funny and plays/comments on horror related indie video games, a topic my kids are very into.

Honestly, I was baffled how they could watch other people play a video game and find it more interesting than playing it themselves.

Now I kind of get it, especially because Jack takes the edge off of the “horror” for wimps like me that can’t handle that stuff.

Summing up, I don’t think movies and movie theaters will ever vanish completely in any way. I’ve said before how glad I am that Barbie and Oppenheimer cleaned up at the box office this summer, but I do see some sort of scaling back, particularly when there’s other entertainment options available, even more so than streaming.
