An excerpt from my script review for Barb and Star Go to Del Vista Mar which will be available 04/05/21:
1.) Marketability of the Idea
Aside from consistently saying they were going to Del Boca Vista?
This story is fucking wacky.
Not the good kind of wacky, where it warms you to it eventually.
This is more like an acid induced fever dream Yellow Submarine fucking wacky.
It was just all over the place and didn’t make sense.
(More on that later.)
The important notion to take away from this section though is not to write a project that’s unfocused, cliché, and implements half-assed references to 80s pop culture.
You’re not Kristen Wiig.
And while we’re on that topic…
I like Kristen Wiig. She’s funny, which is one of the reasons I wanted to read this script.
Reading some of the professional reviews (linked below), I can’t help but wonder if some of those gushing reviews weren’t just a free pass.
This script, written by anyone else male or female, wouldn’t have seen the light of day, let alone been made.
“This is what theaters need…” Really?!
Hell, maybe it’s like how I initially didn’t care for Jojo Rabbit in written form, but love the film.
Perhaps it’s all in the actors’ delivery, but at least Jojo had some truly endearing moments.
This script? It didn’t even read like a rejected SNL skit. It felt more like one of those two minute segments where Colin Jost or Michael Che cut to a duo playing some amusing cliché, only dragged out for ninety minutes.
